Did you know that Nissan Leaf was the world’s best-selling electric car until the Tesla Model 3 came and stole its march? It might no longer sit atop of the global battery-powered car table, but Nissan’s electric hatchback remains a brilliant offering to the class with its mix of performance, range and sharp looks. And now, thanks to the introduction of a new external sound generator, it’s got a more refined voice for 2021, too, making it safer and more recognisable in town.

In a bid to give the mid-sized SUV's range a refresh before summer arrives, Jaguar has introduced two new versions of its F-Pace to the world: the 400 Sport and the 300 Sport. Adding more style and sportiness (if the name didn't already give the latter away), the new-for-22 models come with an exterior and interior upgrade, further refined infotainment system, and a more powerful mild hybrid package. Buyers these days are certainly not short for choice in the crossover segment – that much is immediately clear when you note the number of compact, high-riding models in stock at cinch. Yet manufacturers still seem keen to find a class nook and cranny now and then. That brings us nicely to the new Volkswagen Taigo, a crossover that’s about the size of a Polo and smaller than a T-Cross, which mixes soft-SUV styling with a swooping roofline. In marketing talk, it’s a compact crossover-coupe, but by all measures it’s a slightly taller, more dramatic take on the VW hatchback formula.

Peugeot is plugging the gap between its 308 hatchback and the 508 saloon with this, the all-new 408. The French manufacturer has effectively blended elements of the two existing models to create a striking fastback (named as such thanks to its downward-sloping roof), which blends sportiness and space - or style and practicality.
